Inflated Resume Goes Bust

An executive search firm, recruiting for a high-profile position on behalf of a board of directors at a distinguished institution, engaged HR Risk Mitigation LLC to perform a background check on a top candidate.

Research revealed two immediate discrepancies between the candidate’s provided application compared to her resume and LinkedIn profile. Although she claimed only a bachelor’s degree on her application, both her resume and LinkedIn profile showed a master’s as well as a PhD degree from two additional schools. Similarly, the candidate’s bio on her current employer’s website touted both her master’s and PhD degrees.

HR Risk Mitigation was able to verify her bachelor’s degree, but neither her master’s nor PhD degrees. Contact with one school registrar verified she was enrolled only in the master’s program and no degree was awarded. As the PhD was from an international institution, HR Risk Mitigation requested additional documentation from the candidate, but the candidate never responded to multiple requests.

Days later, HR Risk Mitigation discovered the candidate had removed the PhD degree from her company bio as well as her LinkedIn profile, and she modified both regarding her master’s coursework. Despite the candidate’s efforts to conceal her exaggerations (lies), HR Risk Mitigation had copies of the original bio and LinkedIn profile as well as the newly revised ones. HR Risk Mitigation’s report documented the discrepancies and the efforts to conceal the fabrications.

HR Risk Mitigation goes above and beyond for its clients, using multiple sources to perfect its research and reporting.
